Financial Assistance

Student Assistance Fund

The Student Assistance Fund is funded by the Irish Government and part funded by the European Social Fund Program for Employability, Inclusion and Learning (PEIL) 2014 – 2020.

Since 2017, an additional €1 million per year has been allocated to the SAF with HEIs asked to prioritise and ring-fence this element of funding for the support of part-time students who are lone parents or members of the other access target groups identified in the National Plan for Equity of Access to Higher Education. Since 2019, additional funding has been allocated to the SAF in respect of students studying for a Professional Master of Education (PME).

Students who are non-EU nationals, but who are eligible for free or reduced fees in line with the criteria for the Free Fees Initiative, may be considered for the SAF subject to meeting the eligibility criteria.

Administered by the Access Service, the Fund provides limited support for full-time and part-time (excluding night study) registered LIT students who are in on-going financial difficulties and must meet the application eligibility criteria. Funding is not available under this fund for the cost of tuition or registration fees.

Unfortunately not all applications will be successful due to limited funds. Students who apply to the fund are assessed on an individual and confidential basis.
Students whose application is successful and in order to receive payment must meet the following conditions:-

  • Fully registered
  • No outstanding registration fees.
  • Complete the application form correctly
  • Submit the relevant documents

Please see the FAQ for further information on how to apply.

Online applications available online from the 30th September 2019, closing date of the 8th November 2019.

We will use the data provided on the application form to assess your application for the Student Assistance Fund (‘SAF’). If your application is successful, the data provided will be retained by LIT in line with our Data Retention Schedule and in accordance with the requirements of the HEA and the ESF. LIT is required to provide SAF data to the HEA and the ESF in order to allow them to monitor and report on the use of funding from the European Structural and Investment Fund. In the event that your application is not successful, your application will not be retained and will be securely disposed of.

If you have any queries in regards the fund, please email SAF@lit.ie
