LIT History

Limerick Institute of Technology operates under a Governing Body established under the Institutes of Technology Acts 1992 to 2006. The Institute, however, traces its origins back to 1852 when the Athenaeum Society started a School Of Arts and Fine Crafts in Limerick. In 2002/3 we celebrated 150 years of service.

Responsibility for the educational activities passed to the City Corporation before the end of the century and, in 1930, into the hands of the then newly established City of Limerick Vocational Education Committee.

The 1930 Act provided for courses of Professional and Higher Technical level. These responsibilities were discharged and provided the region with people of Professional, Technical and Craft-standing, who were the foundation on which much of the Industrial, Commercial and Cultural developments, now to be seen in the Midwest, was built.
