LIT Welcomes €2 million in Funding Towards LIT/AIT TU Consortium

President of LIT, Professor Vincent Cunnane has welcomed €2 million in funding allocated to LIT and AIT as part of the Government’s investment in the progression and advancement of Technical Universities. Prof_Vincent_Cunnane_2019.jpg Professor Cunnane said,

“The announcement of this funding by Minister for Education and Skills, Joe McHugh and Minister of State with responsibility for Higher Education, Mary Mitchell O’Connor today (Friday), further endorses the Government’s support for the new LIT/AIT consortium and the development of a new, unique Technical University for the Mid West and Midlands.

“The funding will allow both LIT and AIT develop our goals and objectives towards an application for TU designation.”

“This is the first tranche of funding in the development of a new Technological University that will have a clear regional focus with a national and international outlook. LIT and AIT’s application is aimed at developing a new unique university with a strengthened regional focus that will benefit our staff, our students and the communities we serve.

“This funding is a testament to that vision, and the significant contribution which we know a TU can make to advancing regional development and deliver national socio-economic progress,” he said.

LIT and AIT announced earlier this week that it was forming a consortium to develop a new Technological University for the Mid West and Midlands, having made a joint application for funding earlier this year to the Higher Education Authority 2019 call for submissions for higher education landscape restructuring, consolidation and collaborative projects.

“This funding brings us one step further along the path to providing accessible Higher Education to a large portion of the country’s population while strengthening our commitment to our regions,” added Professor Cunnane.
