This one-year programme is envisioned to offer a transformative learning environment that aims to enrich both personal and cultural life contexts by cultivating a practice of the Creative Imagination. Students learn to engage with the unconscious and experience different aspects of the psyche through dreams, imagery, and active imagination, utilising the arts to augment and inform their understanding.
It is ideal for creatives seeking fresh perspectives on their work, and who are interested in fostering a working relationship with the creative nature of the unconscious. It should also appeal to anyone in the healing professions, the creative industries, those with a practice in psychotherapeutic or counselling and, more generally, anyone interested in Art and Psyche. The ethos of the course is also informed by wisdom traditions, mythology and deep ecology responding to the challenges of our times.
The theoretical underpinning is largely informed by depth psychology, with an emphasis on analytical psychology. Context-based learning also allows for a deepening of the student’s creative process for personal development purposes as well as other life contexts, including analytic, therapeutic, academic and artistic.
This course is in response to the popular Certificate in Jungian Psychology with Art Therapy. It continues its approach of combining experiential with theoretical learning, and so promises to be both a fascinating and educational journey.
Note that a background in the arts or psychology is not required. The level 8 Certificate in Jungian Psychology with Art Therapy is recommended though not a requirement.
- Apply and evaluate key concepts and theories of depth psychology and analytical psychology to personal process and the visual arts, based on a combination of theoretical and experiential learning.
- Apply and evaluate relevant concepts to the broader context of a cultural problematic such as inequality, injustice, climate change and the environmental crisis.
- Engage in practices of the creative imagination through methods of active imagination, creative expression and image-making and to record such material through creative and reflective journaling.
- Participate in group workshops and online social connectivity with integrity, empathy and respect for the confidentiality of peers.
What are the entry requirements?
Applicants must possess a primary honours degree or equivalent. Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning (RPL) will be granted based on relevant experience and training in accordance with LIT’s RPL policy. Candidates are required to submit an application form, submit a sample of writing and attend an interview. Any personal development work completed will be considered an advantage. Completion of the level 8 Certificate in Jungian Psychology with Art Therapy is recommended but not a requirement. Acceptance on the course is based on a first-come-first serve basis to suitable applicants. Applications close on Friday 4th September 2020.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE: Applicants who do not have English as their first language must ensure they satisfy English Language requirements. For entry to undergraduate courses, a minimum score of 5.5 in an IELTS exam is required. For postgraduate courses, a minimum of 6.0 is required. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure their English proficiency meets these requirements.

Are there opportunities for further study?
Subject to sufficient demand follow on modules are planned, with a view to achieving a Postgraduate Certificate, a Postgraduate Diploma, and an MA.
Trainers include Ursula Shields-Huemer, Carol Cunningham, Aileen Young, Julie Aldridge, Steve Myers, Martina Cleary, Lyn Mather and Mathew Mather.
Ursula is a Jungian analyst, a psychotherapist and supervisor with a private practice in Galway. Her academic background is in literature, cultural studies and history; she has lectured at Austrian, American and Irish universities. Carol Cunningham is a Jungian analyst in private practice in Co Kildare. With an academic background in music and musicology, she enjoys working and teaching with image and fairytales. Aileen Young is a Jungian Analyst who works in private practice in north county Dublin. She has given lectures on Jungian topics on several training courses in Dublin. She is the President of the Irish Society of Jungian Analysts. Julie is a practicing artist and art therapist and taught for a number of years on the Cork based MA in Art Therapy. She is influenced by archetypal and post-Jungian approaches to therapy. Julie is now a full time artist, and offers bespoke workshops. Steve Myers has a MA in Jungian and Post-Jungian studies, a PhD in Psychoanalytic Studies, and is author of Myers-Briggs typology vs Jungian Individuation (Routledge 2019). He has also used typology in commercial applications since the early 1990s.Martina is a lens-based media artist and a lecturer at LSAD (Limerick School of Art and Design). She completed a practice-based PhD in photographic research at The European Centre of Photographic Research e(CPR) Newport, and also holds an MFA in Painting, and an MA in Art and Education. She regularly exhibits her work nationally and internationally. Lyn has a background in art and arts facilitation and is a practicing art therapist. She utilizes Jungian theory in her approach to art therapy. Mathew (course director) is a lecturer at LSAD. He has a PhD in Jung and Alchemy from the University of Essex, and is author of The Alchemical Mercurius: esoteric symbol of Jung’s life and works (Routledge 2014).
This is a part time certificate course requiring 12 course days across the academic year, on Fridays and Saturdays, as well as bi-weekly online engagement in the form of online lectures, experiential exercises, regular contributions to an online discussion forum, as well as eight one-to-one meetings (four experiential and four theoretical) over the academic year.
What will the time commitment be?
Each 5 credits will normally equate to approximately 100 Total Learning Hours. Total Learning Hours includes the time you spend in class (lectures, tutorials, practical elements) and the time you spend completing work outside of college. The balance between these two varies by discipline, and by level of study.
You should bear in mind that the workload will increase at particular times e.g. when assignments are due.
Coursework includes: creative and reflective journaling, online contribution to a discussion forum, self-directed research, creative assessment, supervision meetings, presentation and an essay/project.
