Course Overview

This Level 8 programme aims to produce graduates who have developed comprehensive analytical and rounded business skills, which blend perfectly to solve business problems using appropriate Computer Software solutions.
The fusion of Business with Computing allows students to achieve maximum learning and self-development. Students will advance their business information technology knowledge,experience and skills through extensive practical assignments and course work.
Computing and Technology are part of just about everything that touches our lives. Gaining a proficiency in the different dimensions of computing and business will provide graduates with the necessary skills to create a stable career. The programme also offers students an opportunity to gain Professional Computing Certification (Microsoft) as part of their studies, as well as a six-month work placement opportunity in Year 3.

What are the entry requirements?

Leaving Certificate

A minimum of 2 H5 & 4 O6/H7 grades in six Leaving Certificate subjects, including Mathematics and English or Irish.

QQI FET/FETAC

TUS accepts QQI-FET/FETAC awards for entry on all courses of study. Please refer to our Admissions information for details.

Mature Applicants

Candidates applying as mature applicants may be required to attend an interview and may be requested to take an aptitude test to prove their suitability for a place on this programme.

International Applicants

International applicants should apply directly to the International Office at TUS, allowing plenty of time for completing the visa process. Applications for September start should be made by 1st June at the latest to ensure visas are processed in time.   • Introduction To Financial Accounting

    Credits: 5

    Identify the fundamentals of financial accounting and be able to apply these principles to produce the financial information required by modern business organisations.

  • Business Communication And Analysis

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is that learners will be introduced to the communication process and the essentials of effective business communication be that verbal, non-verbal or written.

  • Business Mathematics

    Credits: 5

    This module will provide the learner with the fundamentals of business mathematics in areas such as graph drawing and interpretation, algebra and its business applications, probability and financial mathematics including investment appraisal.

  • Introduction To Business Databases

    Credits: 5

    This module will introduce the learner to relational database concepts and the implementation of a simple relational database on MS Access.

  • Management Principles

    Credits: 5

    To investigate the environmental context of management, to examine the theory supporting management practice and to explore key management functions and the skills needed for managerial success.

  • Introduction To Web Development

    Credits: 5

    This module will introduce the learner to the fundamentals involved in the development of web pages.

  • Financial Accounting

    Credits: 5

    Further development of the financial accounting principles and concepts and be able to apply these to produce the financial information required by modern business organisations.

  • Business Database Development

    Credits: 5

    This module advances the learners knowledge of Database Development and introduces the learner to SQL Language.

  • Information Technology And Data Analysis Application

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is that learners will be introduced to the communication process and the essentials of effective business communication. Equally, the learner will be introduced to information technology and the impact on business along with associate risks and regulations.

  • Responsive Web Development

    Credits: 5

    This module will provide the learner with the skills required to design and develop a responsive website for a business.

  • Organisational Behaviour

    Credits: 5

    To provide learners with an introduction to the organisational setting and dynamic and examine the role of management as an integrating activity. To offer an integrated view embracing both theory and practice and cover the broad range of influences which drive organisational behaviour.

  • Statistical Methods for Business

    Credits: 5

    This module will provide the learner with the fundamentals of statistics and how these can be applied in business.

  • Business Law Fundamentals

    Credits: 5

    This module will equip the learner with an understanding of the legal and regulatory issues involved in Business Law.  The aim of this module is to provide learners with a knowledge of the legal system and principles of tort law and contract law. The module will enable the learner to apply legal theory to different real life scenarios.

  • Cost Accounting

    Credits: 5

    To provide the learner with a comprehensive understanding of the importance of cost accounting principles in the business process. The learner will acquire competencies in costing that can be applied to all business environments.

  • Commercial Databases Theory

    Credits: 5

    On successful completion of this module the learner will demonstrate a knowledge of the management of a database system.

  • Introduction to Marketing

    Credits: 5

    This module aims to provide students with a broad understanding of the fundamentals of marketing and an appreciation of the role and importance of marketing in modern business.

  • Introduction To Microeconomics

    Credis: 5

    The aim of this module is to provide learners with decision-making skills and an understanding of the competitive environment.  The module also aims to develop learner’s analytical ability and critical thinking skills.

  • Web Programming

    Credits: 5

    This module provides an introduction to the discipline, methodologies and techniques of client-side web programming.

  • Business Process Management

    Credits: 5

    Business Process Management aims to improve business performance by optimising efficiency of connecting activities in the process of provision of a product or service. Business Process Modelling techniques, used in Business Process Management, are concerned with the mapping of the workflow in business processes and to enable understanding, analysis and are the basis for process improvement and for design of Business Information Systems.

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is to provide learners with an understanding of the macroeconomic environment.  The module also aims to develop learners’ analytical ability and critical thinking skills.

  • Ip And Technology Law

    Credits: 5

    An introduction to key issues relating to intellectual property and technology law and how these issues impact on business.

  • Management Accounting

    Credits: 5

    Develop an appreciation of the management accounting skills necessary for stock valuation, control and decision making within the organisation.

  • Commercial Database Environment

    Credits: 5

    On successful completion of this unit the learner will demonstrate a knowledge of the business requirements of a business database system.

  • Marketing Communications

    Credits: 5

    Marketing Communications will familiarise the learner with the tools and techniques used to communicate effectively with existing and potential customers. Learners will also develop the skills to assess and evaluate a variety of marketing communications strategies and media alternatives.

  • Customer Care & Customer Relationship Management

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is to provide the learner with a thorough understanding of key Customer Relationship Management (CRM) concepts, technologies & applications and have an appreciation of the need for good customer care.

  • Applied Programming

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is to provide students with the range of development skills necessary to program database-focused, integrated computer applications specifically focused on developing business operations solutions.

  • Enterprise Resource Planning

    Credits: 5

    This module is an introduction to the processes involved in the management of the Operations of a company, specifically Operations Strategy, Aggregate Planning, Inventory Management, Quality Management. It also introduces the students to the evolution of, and the need for, Enterprise Resource Planning Systems

  • Human Resource Management

    Credits: 5

    This module introduces the student to the theory and practice of people at work. It explores how people perform in the work environment and why they perform in a certain way (attitudes to work and motivation). The impact of the loss of work, the future of work as well as health and wellbeing in the workplace will also form part of the module. An overview of grievance and disciplinary procedures will be given as well as a brief look at trade unionism and industrial relations.

  • Introduction To Data Analytics

    Credits: 5

    Many businesses are increasingly using sophisticated data analysis techniques to both increase productivity and to build and sustain competitive advantage.  This module provides an introduction to this important area introducing the student to the concepts involved.

  • Workplace Effectiveness

    Credits: 5

    This module explores the nature of work and human behaviour through the dual lens of workplace psychology and personal effectiveness. It focuses on the work-based performance of individual workers and groups and analyses the influences and effects of their work environment.  The module promotes critical reflection and self-awareness of learners in order to enhance their personal effectiveness and develop appropriate professional responses to workplace challenges.

  • Work Placement/Study Abroad

    Credits: 30

    This Work Placement/Study Abroad component is an integral part of all academic programmes of the Institute and is provided in compliance with HEA/DES requirements for practice-based learning on all third level courses as laid out in the “Higher Education System Performance Framework 2018-2020”. The overall aim of the module is to offer the student the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills gained throughout their course of study up to this point in a new and relevant experiential setting. This is to be achieved whilst facilitating the student in developing the practical life-skill competencies and communication skills necessary to function as an effective member of the work environment and wider society.

    The skills developed during work placement include technical job-related skills, numeracy and literacy skills, use of new technologies, critical evaluation of the host organisation and meta-cognition skills such as reflective learning and self-regulation. Students will apply previously acquired learning, work with less explicit instruction and cope with a variety of workplace challenges.

    The student’s employability is enhanced by working on a wide range of employment skills, from adapting to workplace culture, managing time and stress to demonstrating initiative and engagement in their work tasks.

    Throughout work placement, students have ample opportunity to build confidence in their personal brand.  The work placement assessment requires students to identify and actively improve key skills such as productivity, professionalism, communication, motivation, initiative, problem-solving and decision-making.  Students must reflect on how they have managed challenges in the workplace, how they operate within teams and are also guided to explore an area in their workplace which lies outside their designated area of work.

    Students choosing to study abroad will be provided a comparable programme of study in an approved foreign partner Institution.

  • Business Problem Solving (Elective)

    Credits: 30

    Business problem solving is available as an alternative for students who have not been successful in gaining work placement. The aim of this module is to offer students the opportunity to engage in real- world business problems by participating actively in problem solving activities related to business issues. The module will advance the student’s ability to problem solve, to think critically and to communicate effectively, whether through presentations or written reports.

  • Company Law (Elective)

    Credits: 5

    This module is intended to provide learners with an understanding of the fundamentals of Irish Company Law.

  • Digital Marketing

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is to ensure students will be able to coherently discuss digital marketing within the context of a business environment. This module explores digital marketing through a number of lens’ including the marketing environment, digital advertising and social media, marketing communications and SEO. It provides students with the opportunity to develop and practice digital marketing competencies and gain greater understanding and confidence in the area of digital marketing.

  • Enterprise Software

    Credits: 5

    On successful completion of this unit the learner will have gained an in-depth understanding of the role of computers in modern industry, and gained an appreciation of the role of Enterprise Software systems. The learner will also gain an understanding of the increasing importance of Supply Chain Management in modern business. The practical content will involve the use of computer based problem solving tools and techniques in addressing everyday business issues to achieve optimal solutions

  • Financial Management (Elective)

    Credits: 5

    This module enables the learner to appreciate the role of the finance department in modern organisations and how they make an essential contribution towards the strategic, tactical and operational goals of those organisations.

  • Final Year Project

    Credits: 10

    The aim of this module is to consolidate and build on students’ knowledge from previous years in a capstone research report. The student will develop research skills including how to write a research proposal, conduct a literature review, compose a research question, identify appropriate research design, gather and analyse data, and present findings.

  • Strategic Management Concepts

    Credits: 5

    This module will introduce students to Strategic Management concepts , methods and benefits.  While introducing the full Strategic Management Process the focus will be on the Formulation Stage.

  • Advanced European Union Law (Elective)

    Credits: 5

    This module is an advanced study of the understanding of EU law. Students will focus almost exclusively on primary texts, principally Treaties, Regulations and Directives and on case law with a view to understanding the operation of the structures of EU law.

  • Digital Marketing, Analytics & User Experience (Ux)

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is to ensure students will be able to coherently discuss digital marketing within the context of a business environment. This module explores digital marketing through a number of lens’ including GDPR and data privacy, analytics, user experience and campaign planning and budgeting. It provides students with the opportunity to develop and practice digital marketing competencies and gain greater understanding and confidence in the area of digital marketing.

  • Advanced Data Analytics

    Credits: 5

    Advanced Data Analytics.  This module addresses advanced topics in data analysis including trends and future directions.  It uses an industry standard programming language to explore data analysis problems and solutions.

  • Enterprise Software 2

    Credits: 5

    On successful completion of this unit the learner will have gained an in-depth understanding of the role of computers in modern industry and be proficient in the use of a commercial Enterprise Resource Planning package. The learned will also understand the inputs, steps involved, and the desired outputs involved in a range of business processes.

  • Managerial Finance (Elective)

    Credits: 5

    Acquire the advanced management accounting techniques and practices to assist management in the decision-making process.

  • Strategic Management Practice

    Credits: 5

    This module aims to provide learners with the knowledge, tools and techniques to successfully select the most appropriate business strategies for a given organisation and understand the challenges and mechanisms for successful strategy implementation and evaluation.
