Course Overview

This programme is designed to provide Civil Engineering graduates to the construction and civil engineering industry and provides many transferable skills. The areas of speciality include Civil Engineering, Construction, Geotechnical Engineering, Highway Engineering, Public Health Engineering and Structural Engineering.

Graduates are equipped to undertake challenging and responsible activities on site, in the laboratory or the design office. During the programme, there are opportunities for students to participate in site visits, organised by the programme team.

What are the entry requirements?

Leaving Certificate

A minimum of 5 O6/H7 grades in Leaving Certificate subjects, including Mathematics and English/Irish.

Mature Applicants

Candidates applying as mature applicants may be required to attend an interview and may be requested to take an aptitude test to prove their suitability for a place on this programme.

International Applicants

International applicants should apply directly to the International Office at TUS, allowing plenty of time for completing the visa process. Applications for September start should be made by 1st June at the latest to ensure visas are processed in time. You should familiarise yourself with visa processing times for your country of origin to ensure you make a timely application. Find out more here.

    This module introduces and consolidates basic mathematical principles such as Trigonometry, Algerbra and Calculus and promotes learner awareness of mathematical concepts.

    This module establishes the essential principles of site surveying and setting out construction works.

    This module aims at inspiring the learner to synthesize subject content and generate an in-depth knowledge of Civil Engineering Construction and Soils through a theoretical, analytical and creative approach.

  • Structural Engineering

    Credits: 10

    To develop the students knowledge, intellectual skills and competence in the advanced design and detailing of structural elements.

  • Highway Engineering & Management Practice

    Credits: 10

    To provide students with the concepts and knowledge to understand the role of a managers in the civil engineering industry and an understanding of the processes of road planning, design, construction and maintenance.

  • Public Health & Environmental Engineering

    Credits: 10

    To develop the student’s knowledge of public health and environmental issues.

  • Major Project

    Credits: 10

    Module (part A) develops the student’s ability to work independently and to recognise, define and investigate problems.

    Module (part B) integrates the third year modules into a major group project that simulates a real life civil engineering project.

  • Contract Administration and Law (Elective)

    Credits: 10

    The aim of this module is to develop the learner’s knowledge and critical understanding of Contract Administration and Law, with particular emphasis on Civil Engineering capital works projects.

  • Engineering Mathematics & Civil Engineering I.T. (Elective)

    Credits: 10

    The aim of this module is to develop the students mathematical and analytical abilities to allow him/her to competently evaluate and solve mathematical, scientific and associated engineering problems.

    The Civil Engineering I.T. element of this module aims to enable the learner to understand the principles behind construction relevant software and the integration of relevant software into the civil engineering industry whilst also enabling the learner to gain competency in the application of relevant software and IT systems to civil engineering projects.
