Course Overview

The aim of this add on Level 8 BEng in Process and Engineering Management is to make undergraduates process ready to improving manufacturing, service or business processes. Modules such as Engineering Operation Management, Project Management, Statistics, Applied Process Improvement and chosen dissertation will provide key skills and techniques required in industry to identify issues, evaluate, improve and control existing processes on a proactive basis. The course is designed as an applied work engaged programme where each learner actively works on projects based in industry across various modules. In addition the learners visit various companies in the region to observe and experience their manufacturing environment. The main objective in developing this course was to provide graduates to industry that would be ready to work in a manufacturing or service setting.

Due to the applied nature of the modules and their engagement with industry students can gain addition qualifications on top of their Level 8 honours degree as follows:

On completion of both Applied Process Improvement modules students can apply to obtain a six sigma Green Belt qualification that is recognised worldwide.
On completion of both Project and Applied Project Management modules students can apply to obtain a certificate in Project Management from PMI – Project Management Institute.

What are the entry requirements?

Applicants must satisfy a minimum entry requirement of a pass in a relevant Bachelor Degree (Level 7) in Engineering, Science or Technology with an average performance of at least 40% or an equivalent qualification to a Bachelor Degree (Level 7) overall with appropriate prerequisite subjects or a pass in a relevant Bachelor Degree (Level 7) with one-year relevant work experience.

Course Modules

  • Applied Process Improvement 1

    Credits: 10

    Lean Six Sigma Improvement Methodologies represents the drive of efforts in manufacturing and service organisations to improve, services, and processes. Six Sigma represents a new direction to quality and productivity improvement, but the tools and philosophy have been established in the fundamental principles of total quality and continuous improvement that have been in use for the past number of decades.

    The aim of this module is to give a broad overview of the tools and techniques that are used in Lean Six Sigma projects. This module will help the student develop a number of Professional Transferable Skills, such as critical thinking, problem solving, communication (written and oral), entrepreneurship, networking and customer focus.

  • Engineering Operations Management 1

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is to provide the learner with an introduction to engineering management concerned with company strategies and objectives. To evaluate product life cycle, process types, designs, layouts, process analysis while ascertaining a knowledge of current technologies and data processing used in the manufacturing A broad overview will be given of the tools and techniques that are used in the operations and manufacturing environment to ensuring that operations are efficient in terms of using as few resources as needed, and effective in terms of meeting customer requirements.

    This module will help the student develop a number of Professional Transferable Skills, such as critical thinking, problem solving, entrepreneurship, and customer focus.

  • Engineering Project Management

    Credits: 5

    This module provides the learner with an introduction to formal project management methodologies and the project management environment. Utilising active learning strategies, the module develops the learner’s knowledge and skills in the various tools and techniques for effective project management outlined in the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK). The module also provides a platform for the learner to investigate their own personality type, and to develop a deeper awareness of the effects of different personality types on the project team.

    This module also introduces the learner to situational project management through multiple choice questions, which are in line with the Project Management Institute (PMI) accreditation assessment method.

  • Dissertation

    Credits: 10

    This module aims to develop learners’ research skills and ability to work independently to produce a dissertation in accordance with pre-determined formats, standards and ethics. The topic selected must be directly relevant to the course of study being undertaken by the student and the dissertation is to provide an exhaustive, critical and in-depth analytical study of the specific area of interest.

  • Process Statistics 1

    Credits: 5

    This module aims to:

    1. To give the student a broad foundation in statistics so that the student has the necessary confidence and skills in descriptive statisticals to visualise and interpret data both manually and using statistical software.

    2. To introduce the student to the concept of Quality Science, to give the student a broad understanding of the Six Sigma methodology and its statistical techniques

  • Applied Process Improvement 2

  • Engineering Operations Management 2

    Credits: 5

    The aim of this module is to provided the learner with an introduction to engineering management concerned with forcasting of product, capacity planning, new product introduction, validation of a process, supply chain and change management in a manufacturing environment. The module will also give a broad overview of the qualit ymanagement systems, standards, compliance, auditing and regulator bodiese requirments and effects on a product and manufacturing environemnt.

    This module will help the student develop a number of Professional Transferable Skills, such as critical thinking, problem solving, entrepreneurship, and customer focus.

  • Applied Project Management

    Credits: 10

    The module adopts both theoretical and active learning, where the learner completes a work based project. The learner applies analytical tools developed in the programme to make observations and critically analyse a project that is industrial in nature. The learner creates a formal project report utilising Advanced Word, Excel and MS Project and is provided with the opportunity to develop their presentation skills as they present work throughout the semester.

    This module aims to advance the learner’s transferrable skills, in order to prepare for employment, including creative problem solving, technical writing and presentation skills.

  • Process Statistics 2

    Credits: 5

    The module builds on the Students foundation in statistics and builds confidence in statistical skills in order to, visualise and interpret inferential statistics, make good decisions from samples / populations, improve quality

    Continue exploring Quality Science, to give the student an understanding of the Six Sigma methodology, and to give the student a broad foundation in the statistical thinking that form the basis of the Six Sigma process.
