The Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering has postgraduate opportunities through research in a number of areas, including Intelligent Systems, Industrial Automation, Energy Technology, Electronic Systems, Computer Engineering, Big Data and Data Analytics, Data Centre Technologies, Immersive VR Systems and Multimodal Interface Design.

Postgraduate Research is closely linked with Research Centres and Groups in order to provide a supportive environment and specialist equipment and labs for the learners. These centres and groups work closely with industry and nationally and international funding agencies.

ACORN Research Centre

The ACORN Research Centre is focused on the development of intelligent systems for applications in industrial automation, environmental monitoring, energy management and integrated renewable energy. Funded through collaborative industry led research programmes the Centre develops technical solutions for implementation in a range of industrial and commercial applications. With a community of over 30 researchers, postdocs and postgrads, annual funding of over €0.5 million and a wide community of Industry Partners and support clusters, ACORN is a leading Centre in the region and nationally.

The Centre for Research in Game Technology & Interactive Systems

The Centre’s research mission is to utilize emerging game technologies to enhance user-experience and task efficiency in applications requiring next-generation multimodal interfaces. Its focus is on designing immersive virtual environments that implement perceptual and cognitive factors associated with the auditory, visual and haptic domains. Current research at the Centre includes collaboration with University College Cork and Dublin City University on the development of a multimodal music rehearsal system for visually disabled musicians in conventional orchestral settings, which combines wireless motion tracking with audio/haptic feedback. The Centre also collaborates closely with Logitech Inc. on immersive VR applications, incorporating novel gesture control input and audio spatialisation techniques.
