The aim of the Certificate in Residential Energy Retrofit Fabric programme is to up-skill building professionals to develop knowledge and skills that allow them to design and deliver high quality, energy-efficient retrofits to existing buildings while complying with Ireland’s latest

Building Regulations. This will also place them in a position to contribute to meeting Ireland's climate action and energy targets in relation to green retrofitting of buildings. It will additionally boost demand for energy efficiency from householders and the public sector – Government and the public - by having a trusted industry professional/standard.

What are the entry requirements?

Entry Requirements

An honours degree (level 8) in a cognate (e.g. Engineering, Architecture, Building Services, Construction Management etc.) discipline or approved equivalent qualification


A level 7 qualification in a cognate discipline (e.g. Engineering, Architecture, Building Services, Construction Management etc.,) or approved equivalent qualification, with 1-year relevant work experience

Special Case Registrations:

Prospective participants who do not meet the entry requirements for the programme detailed above, but who may qualify for admission by meeting certain other equivalent criteria, including workplace experience, should apply to the Department of Flexible Learning Office using the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) procedure for consideration.

What modules will I study?

Course content 

Building Physics and Fabric (10 credits) 

Modes of heat transfer, Thermal Bridging, Heat Loss calculations, Properties of Insulation Materials, Insulation Systems, Assessment of Fabric upgrade option

Air Tightness (5 credits)

Air tightness, Thermal comfort and air quality,  Moisture management, Designing air tightness solutions, Cast studies

Building Defects, Detection and Analysis (5 credits)

Digital Tools for Identifying Building Defects in Existing Buildings,  Condition Assessment Reports for Existing Buildings,  Building Fabric Defects Identification and Analysis for Energy Upgrades, Hygrothermal risk evaluation and modelling, U-value calculations, · Maintenance and Repair

Further study opportunities:

On successful completion of the Special Purpose Award in Residential Energy Retrofit Fabric (Level 8) programme, students may complete the SPA Residential Energy Retrofit Systems and the SPA Residential Energy Retrofit Management to complete a Higher Diploma in Residential Energy Retrofit Management programme (Level 8)

What are the career prospects?

Career opportunities:

Graduates can be employed within residential retrofit “One Stop Shops” or with SME’s providing services within the residential sector and contributing to the target to renovate 500,000 buildings by 2030 in Ireland.
