The Irish agriculture and food-processing sector is currently undergoing considerable growth, but it is crucial that this growth does not negatively affect the environment. Skilled environmental managers with knowledge of the environmental issues in agriculture and agri-business are needed by industry. This programme provides a solid foundation in science and environmental management, combined with agriculture modules to equip specialists to work in this field. Graduates develop expertise in the management of agriculture’s interaction with the environment to enable sustainable outcomes. They are strongly placed to take advantage of the growing employment opportunities within the agriculture and agri-business sector and also the wider environmental management field. 

 

What are the entry requirements?

Leaving Certificate

A minimum of 2 H5 & 4 O6/H7 grades in six Leaving Certificate subjects, including Mathematics and English or Irish.

Mature Applicants

Candidates applying as mature applicants may be required to attend an interview and may be requested to take an aptitude test to prove their suitability for a place on this programme.

    This module aims to develop the personal and Professional skills of students to prepare to effectively negotiate their academic and professional journey.

    This module introduces students to the principles of effective communication and to develop their personal awareness and develops their communication, team working and presentation skills. The module uses the framework of Emotional Intelligence in developing good customer relations and in creating effective client communication while also examining strategies for managing the challenge of working in interpersonal conflict situations. In addition the module focuses on the students study and academic writing skills as required for 3rd level.

    This module is very interactive and application based so an 80% attendance is required from students.

Are there opportunities for further study?

Graduates may pursue a Masters or Ph.D. programme in related disciplines in Ireland or abroad.

What are the career prospects?

Graduates are qualified for a wide range of roles including roles such as farm auditors, environmental technicians, environmental officers, environmental scientists with businesses, agri business, the public sector and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) or as environmental researchers and consultants.

Graduates are particularly suited to careers with any of the following:

Private sector: Agricultural Consultants (environmental specialist), Environmental service providers (energy, waste, water), Environmental consultants, Self employment.

Public Sector and State Agencies: Government departments including the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Teagasc, National Parks and Wildlife Service, Local authorities, Marine Institute, Energy agencies, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
