LIT has submitted its application for the Athena SWAN Bronze Award. The Athena SWAN initiative aims to effect cultural and systemic change in higher education institutions to support gender equality and the career-progression of women in science, technology, engineering, medicine and mathematics (STEMM) disciplines.
In March 2018, LIT’s Executive and Management Teams unanimously adopted the principles of the Athena SWAN Charter. The principles were subsequently presented to and endorsed by Academic Council with LIT becoming a member of the Charter in July 2018.
LIT appointed Marian Duggan, as Dean, Flexible Learning & VP Equality & Diversity on February 1, 2018. The submission represents LIT’s first application to achieve a Bronze Award.
To oversee and provide leadership, guidance and direction on the achievement of equality, diversity and inclusion objectives, LIT’s Executive Team decided to establish an Equality & Diversity Steering Committee. In addition, LIT’s Executive determined membership based on management role in LIT as well as ensuring that the Committee included student representation. The Committee is chaired by the President and has a current membership of 11. It first met in April 2018 and meets six times per academic year.
President of LIT Professor Vincent Cunnane said, “LIT’s Equality and Diversity Steering Committee, has been established to oversee and provide guidance and direction on the achievement of equality, diversity and inclusion objectives throughout LIT, and I am personally committed to embedding the principals of Equality and Diversity in LIT’s culture.”
“We have adopted the Athena SWAN Charter as a guide to driving its principals therein deep within the organisation and bring about change,” he said.
