LIT President & Chair of THEA Professor Vincent Cunnane has issued the following statement on behalf of the Presidents of the Institutes of Technology

Released

06 October 2020

“We acknowledge the Government’s announcement yesterday, Monday, regarding Covid restrictions throughout the country.

“As part of early preparation for the 2020/2021 academic year, all Institutes of Technology put in place rigorous measures to protect both students and staff regardless of the severity of the restrictions that might be in place. All Institutes of Technology remain open and we continue to deliver our student-centred education in a blended mode with full adherence to public health advice and government guidelines for Higher Education. The enhanced measures adopted by all institutions since the beginning of this academic year allows for safe in-person teaching and research activity, including where students require access to on-campus equipment or specialist supports in the case of vulnerable students.

“We are conscious of the advice from the HSE/NPHET throughout this pandemic and have worked hard to ensure that optimum safety measures are in place in all campuses.  We are acutely aware of the precarious position right across the country.  As campus communities, we continue to work consistently and collaboratively to restrict the spread of this insidious virus.

“Finally, we welcome the balance between the primary focus on public health with the requirement to maintain the learner supports necessary to deliver on our commitment to an effective academic year with a strong student experience in what are extraordinary times.”
