Liam Loftus

My name is Liam Loftus and I am in my final year studying Biotechnology & Biopharmaceutical Science.

From a very young age I have always loved reading and learning about science. Biology is unique because of the complexity of living things and how they interact with each other and the environment. Biology was the subject I enjoyed the most in secondary school which is why I decided to study Applied Biology in college to gain an in-depth and practical understanding of living things. After graduating from Applied Biology I went on to study Bioanalysis & Biotechnology at TUS to further my knowledge and apply the principles of biology to benefit humanity and the environment.

What surprised me most during my first week of college at TUS was the amount of support available when starting my course. Teachers at school would say there would be no one to remind us about deadlines or exams and no one to ask if we got stuck but that couldn’t have been further from the truth.

The lectures and course leaders were so friendly and approachable and would answer any questions we had at the end of our lectures. Another thing that surprised me was how many friends you make in and outside of your course.

The thing I love most about my course is how we are constantly learning new and interesting information in not only lectures but applying what I have learned in a practical way in laboratory sessions. This keeps it very interesting as you’re not just sitting and reading about how things work you actually get to go and do it.

Apart from my course I like how there’s so many things to do on my breaks around campus such as going to get food in the canteen, playing table tennis and pool in the students’ union and even kicking around the ball on the Astro-turf.

I’m really looking forward to graduating from my course and applying the skills and techniques I’ve learned in TUS in the real world. Once I do graduate, I hope to find a job in the biopharmaceutical industry as a Microbiologist, Process Scientist or Quality Assurance Specialist.
