Introduction
The Green-Campus programme encourages a partnership approach to environmental education, management and action in third level institutions. It is an evolution of the Green-Schools Programme, and is managed in Ireland by An Taisce. The Clonmel and Thurles campuses of LIT are making good progress in an effort to secure a Green Flag under the Green-Campus programme. In the future other campuses within LIT may seek this award.

The Committee
A Green-Campus committee, consisting of an enthusiastic group of students and staff, is leading the drive towards Green Flag status, and the on-going maintenance of this status. Participation is open to any student or staff member with an interest in the work of the committee. The involvement of students from a diverse range of courses and the support of the Students’ Union have been key to the success of the initiative to date. The committee works closely with our canteen, cleaning and waste collection contractors, whose co-operation is much appreciated.
Focus on Waste and Litter
The Green-Campus work is focusing initially on the theme of waste and litter, following the selection of that issue as top priority in a referendum of students and staff in April 2012. A key achievement has been the construction and installation of a new waste separation area in the Thurles canteen which has received considerable praise. Another highlight has been the student-organised Green Weeks, with fun awareness-raising events in Thurles and Clonmel.
